Hi, I’m Kate Tsai — a visual development artist and illustrator passionate about crafting evocative worlds and storytelling through design. Currently based in Rhode Island and graduating from Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Illustration, I specialize in background painting, color scripting, and worldbuilding across games and animation.

Over the past few years, I’ve worked with indie teams and studios as a background artist, concept designer, and art director, shipping four games and contributing to multiple exhibitions since 2021. At Mass Digi, I led the visual direction of a game project from early ideation to final assets, fostering collaboration while ensuring visual cohesion. I’ve also supported classrooms as a teaching assistant in oil painting, and regularly take on freelance illustration work for posters and environment art commissions.

Whether I’m designing an atmospheric backdrop, assisting others in their creative growth, or collaborating on a narrative-driven game, I aim to create work that feels lived-in, intentional, and quietly magical.
